Games: Thorpe to carry flag in Games closer
MANCHESTER, Aug 3 AAP - Australia's most prolific gold medallist and the world's bestswimmer, Ian Thorpe, will carry the Australian flag at the Manchester Commonwealth Gamesclosing ceremony.
Thorpe easily won the honour that traditionally goes to the most successful Australianathlete at each Games.
With a day of competition still to come, Thorpe has won five gold medals and a silver,placing him head and shoulders above the rest of the Commonwealth.
"I am sure that all Australians will agree that Ian is a magnificent ambassador forour nation and I am pleased that we can use this occasion to acknowledge his ownderfulcontribution to the success of these Games," said Australian chef de mission Don Stockins.
Only three other athletes will march at tomorrow night's closing ceremony at the ManchesterCity Stadium.
Thorpe's only "failure" so far has come in the 100m backstroke, an event in which hewas competing for the first time at these Games. He took silver behind world championcountryman Matt Welsh.
